I've been in the fire service since 2008 and became a professional firefighter in 2015. I spent 6 years on the hiring panel and conducted hundreds of interviews. I've seen firsthand why candidates are chosen and why others are not.
Beyond hiring, I've facilitated mission, vision, and values development for both the Everett Fire Department and the Snohomish County Fire Chiefs Association. I don't just understand what panels are looking for. I've helped departments define it.
It took me five years and numerous interviews to secure my first job. Once I understood the importance of aligning with panel expectations and connecting with a department's mission, I was hired by the Everett Fire Department. After seven years there, I moved to the Port of Seattle Fire Department, acing the interview on my first try. Now I help others do the same.
